The Temple of Literature is an important historical complex. It was on the grounds of the temple that the first establishment of higher learning was established. At the back of the site there are perhaps thirty or forty large stone turtles each of which carries a large sign forming perhaps the world's first yearbook. The names of the various graduates from that specific year are engraved on the sign on the back of the tortoise which is the symbol of intelligence and wisdom.
