Two of the five stops we made on our four hour city tour were at the sites of monuments by famous artists involving wagons being driven out of big holes. I am assuming that in the early days Montevideo must have been a very muddy place. At each of the statues, locals had set up souvenir stands which turned
out to be the only places for shopping on the tour. The first statue was called La Carreta or the covered wagon, and it had something really unusual--the animals pulling the vehicle looked like bulls. I didn't know that was possible. Maybe they were just rough and tough oxen. The second monument was called La Diligencia or the stagecoach, and it had normal horses pulling it. At the second statue there was a couple doing the tango. They were the last tango dancers we saw on this trip.
