This lovely square is Montevideo's oldest plaza and the home of the Cathedral of Montevideo. At the center of the park like area is a statue of General Jose Gervasio Artigas, the father of Uruguay and the hero of its independence movement. El Cabildo, or town hall, and the Palacio Salvo, Uruguay's tallest building, are located on this square. Its most important theater and opera house, Teatro Solis, is at one corner of the plaza. There is a poor photo of a rather risque ad I saw on a city bus. It showed the two pairs of feet with the smaller ones facing up and the larger ones facing down and between the smaller feet. The ad said "Do it right. Use a condom." I didn't get a photo of the entire ad because I had to turn on the camera and rush before the bus drove past us, but I thought it was really unusual.
