In all the visits I've made to Bangkok, I've never taken a boat on the Mae Nam Chao Phraya at night. Carlos had no interest whatsoever so when Helen said she would enjoy it, I jumped at the chance to have that experience.

There are tours that include the evening cruise on the river, and they always include a dinner. We did not want the dinner cruise, nor did we want to pay the $35 price.

By asking at the tour desk in the hotel, I discovered that there was another boat that cruised the river at night, a boat that was geared to the Thai people. A driver from the hotel said he would take us, and he also took the boat ride. He charged us 500 baht or about $13 for everything including transportation to the boat.

We enjoyed ourselves beginning with our ride through the night time streets seeing all of the lights garlanded on the trees of the city.
