The bay of Portoroz curves around the coast affording sea frontage for many of the dozens of hotels that are strung along the shore to house the thousands of Italian, Austrian and Slovenian tourists who vacation here.
As in Miami's South Beach, the buildings are painted pastel colors. Salmon, gold, aqua, peach and pink are just a few of the colors favored by the Portorozans. The hotels were all across the street from the sea, leaving the shore visible to everyone.
Near the town, Life Forms Park, an outdoor garden of statues, stands on a ridge overlooking Portoroz. From alongside the carved stone statues one can look down on Portoroz stretching around the curve of the coast.
When we made a wrong turn at one point, we ended up in a beautiful subdivision where the homes showed us that Slovenia is not poverty stricken, nor is it a third world country. When we asked about the area, we were told that it was a place for ordinary people to live.
