The quaint main square (a circle actually) is crowned with a tall column on top of which a stautue of King/Saint Olaf looks out on the city he started eleven centuries ago. The column, at the center of the circular plaza, forms the largest sundial in the world.
It is around the main plaza that one finds a large outdoor market with foodstuff and Sami made merchandise as well as the entrance to the largest mall in the area. Our hotel was one half block from the center of town--a perfect location as far as I was concerned.
The Nidaros Cathedral, so named because it was at the mouth of the Nidelvan River, is a focal point of the town. When standing in the Main Plaza, one can see the spire of the venerable building standing about a block away.
It was on the campus of the cathedral that I saw another of the Mother and Child statues marked with the dates 1940-1945. I found them touching, but I didn't understand the significance of them. Another strange statue was that of a fat woman dressed in a dowdy coat and carrying a shopping bag. I posed with a similar one in Narvik. I'm sure there is a good explanation for the statue, but I don't know it.
The city operates a little trolley car sightseeing tour in English that takes in the major sites within the city for a small fee.
Although Stiftsgarden, the largest wooden structure in Northern Europe, was originally built as a private residence in the 1770s by a rich widow, it is today the residence of the Royal Family in Trondheim. In log cabin construction style, the outer walls were notched together around the 12,000 square foot building. The yellow building stands not far from the main square looking like an ordinary, if very large, home.
