Roros (25 images)
We spent our last night in Norway at the Quality Roros, a large hotel with a huge lobby where there was live entertainment. They served an absolutely delicious buffet in a dining room with a view of the historic town of Roros down the hill.

A UNESCO Heritage Site, Roros was founded in 1644 when copper mining was begun in the area. Employees were needed and men came from the surrounding area as well as Germany and Denmark to work in the copper mines. The town was basically a mining town and even the farmers in the area were mine employees. The last mine closed in 1986.

Today the wooden town is a virtual museum that shows the world how miners lived. Many of the buildings are mud roofed, and there is even a hotel in the middle of town that utilizes parts of several of the old buildings.

Getting to town from our hotel was easy, a long walk completely downhill. Getting back was all uphill and in a gentle drizzle, so it wasn't pleasant returning to our hotel.
