A pleasant city located just south of the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi was totally detroyed during WWII. Today the city has been rebuilt into a modern place with all the necessities the people in the area need.
Our hotel was very centrally located, and it had the most unusual lobby. The desk was on one half of a circle while the other half was the bar. One employee wore two hats as both receptionist and bartender.
About a block from our hotel the street it was located on became a pedestrian street with outdoor cafes and a mall. That was a surprise to me since we were at the Arctic Circle, but if we were at all doubtful that the city got cold in the winter, all we had to do was look at the window case in our hotel room. I've never seen a window that thick.
A new bridge is the point of interest that the locals are most proud of as its photo appears on a good many postcards. We didn't see too much more than the bridge on our city tour when we stopped at a Lutheran church and a museum of forestry. I would have preferred to have the morning free so that we could have visited the local museum that looked fascinating.
