The Roads and Scenery in Chobe (55 images)

Chobe was interesting aside from the animals. For one thing the roads were in really bad shape. The potholes were almost big enough to swallow up a vehicle. At one point our wheels got hung up on a big hole and we all had to get out while the driver inched back and forth to get back on the road. He was afraid he would tip over and that if we were inside, we'd be hurt. I was thinking about the animals that might be nearby who would find us looking like tastey snacks. But we were all right.

One of the things that really amazed me was the damage the elephants have done to the trees. They are presently studying what they can do to preserve the land as an elephant reserve because if they keep destroying the trees, it will turn into a desert and then the animals will have no place to live.

They have so many elephants at Chobe that they allow hunting for very large fees. If they didn't, there wouldn't be enough to feed the pachyderms.

It's amazing how people in areas where such beautiful wild animals live have to cold heartedly think of their well being and cull the herds from time to time. Hunters from the United States go there to hunt. They pay large fees which are then used for the upkeep of the other animals.
