The Garden Route and Mossel Bay (69 images)
The Garden Route is a narrow stip of land along the southern coast of South Africa from the West Peninsula to Port Elizabeth in the East. This route is the second most popular tourist area in South Africa after Cape Town. The natural beauty is formed by the mountains to the north and the beaches to the south.

We drove along the entire route and were amazed at the natural beauty and the modern construction along the way.

As we left town we passed the squatters' shacks that surround the big cities of South Africa. They are occupied by refugees from other African nations who flock to South Africa in search of work much like the Hispanics who arrive in the United States.

Our first stop was in Mossel Bay, the site where Bartholomieu Dias landed in 1488. There is a museum named for him in the historical center of town.
