Perched on a column 170 feet above the square stands a statue of Admiral Horatio Nelson, the hero of the battle of Trafalgar where in 1805 Nelson led the British to a naval defeat of Napoleon's troops, thereby setting the path enabling Wellington to vanquish the little corporal at Waterloo.
Alas, the Admiral, who earlier had lost an arm and an eye in battle, did not survive the decisive battle that was so important for England's survival.
The beloved monument was built in 1842 by a grateful nation in the Admiral's honor. Melted down French canons were used for the actual statue.
