Ship Channel (58 images)

In 1900 Galveston, Texas was the largest city and the largest port in the state. After the disastrous hurricane in September, 1900, that left Galveston a shadow of itself, the city of Houston dredged a 25 mile long channel from the city to the Gulf of Mexico and took over the ship traffic. Today Houston is the second largest port in the United States after only New Orleans. In terms of foreign tonnage, Houston is number one.

The Ship Channel Authority provides free 90 minute cruises on the Ship Channel, and on the first Wednesday of November, we cruised on the Sam Houston and viewed many of the huge ships from countries all over the world.
