Plaza de Mayo (41 images)
Named for the month in which Argentina won its independence from the Spanish viceroy in 1810, the main square in the city is the location of some of the most important buildings in the city. On the eastern side is the office of the president, the Casa Rosada, or the pink house so named because it is made of pink Argentine granite. On the northern side of the square is the Metropolitan Cathedral which houses the tomb of General Jose de San Martin, the locally born hero of Argentine independence from Spain. On the western side of the plaza stands the Cabildo which was the original seat of the governmment. Also on the plaza is the City Legislature Building.
